The eighth International Photography Days, held by Near East University every two years, took place on 4-6 November 2013 at the university’s Faculty of Communication Complex.

During the 3 days of photography event, 14 exhibitions, 4 slideshows, 6 paper presentations and 2 photo trips were realized.

Gazi Yüksel, the Organizing Committee Coordinator and Ümit Hassan, the Rector of NEU, made a speech at the opening of the exhibitions.

Gazi Yüksel, the Organizing Committee Coordinator, who made the opening speech of the exhibition, said that the 8th International Photography Days was realized as the first event within the framework of the 25th -anniversary celebrations of Near East University. Yüksel stated that 261 artists from 18 countries participated in the 7 photography days held between 1999 and 2011, and that a total of 201 solo and group exhibitions were held in these events. Yüksel reminded that the 1st President of TRNC Rauf Denktaş honoured and supported the NEU photography days from 1999 to 2011 by participating with his own works and visiting the exhibitions. Yüksel stated that Denktaş’s interest and passion for photography motivated many people to be interested in photography and therefore, they wanted to commemorate him by including a memorial exhibition consisting of Denktaş’s photographs on the 8th photography days.

Gazi Yuksel said, “since 1999, the photography days held every two years underwent a change, under the theme of “Change””. Yüksel added that: “The great statesman Rauf Denktaş, who was the first and only community leader to enter the United Nations General Assembly with a camera, encouraged and motivated most people to start photography. In my interview with this great figure in 1995, he expressed the public’s view of photography in the 1930s and 40s with these words: “The public was clearly indifferent. When you take a photo and show it; “Ya mashallah” they would say, look and laugh. Nobody even thought of making the photos and keeping them in an album. When we look at these days, we see a very different picture.
Nowadays, with the development of technology, there is almost no interest in photography. This is a spectacular change in a good direction. We, as the Near East University, have made important contributions to this change for the last 25 years. As a university, we are an educational institution that has supported, encouraged and contributed to all aspects of the art of photography; without limiting it by opening its halls to artists and organizing competitions before starting their photography days. As it is part of the vision of our university to document the existence and development process of our university in these barren hills in the north of the capital city of Nicosia with a photography day is an indication of sensitivity of our university to the art of photography. Our adventure in photography days is on the 14th year this year.

We brought this event to these days, hand-in-hand together with Prof. Dr. Şenol Bektaş and Asst. Prof. Dr. Birsel Matara. For 14 years, we have shared works of hundreds of people with thousands of photographs, pages of photographic knowledge and manners. To date, we have hosted 261 artists from 18 countries. We held 201 exhibitions. We shared thousands of photos in slideshows. As time goes by, we have developed and changed and this change is still in progress. We organized Photography Days for the first time with a theme. We wanted to see from a photographic point of view whether the only thing that does not change is “Change“. We are here with these feelings and thoughts. In the presence of you, I would like to thank all the Near East community and my beloved students who contributed to the realization of the organization. The 8th photography days have started and the change is continuing.”

Rector of Near East University Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan, while referring to the meaning and importance of photography, said that he was excited when it came to art. Expressing that technology and technique should not be used randomly and that aesthetics were born thanks to the artistic techniques. Hassan pointed out that many things changed with the Industrial Revolution and that photography developed parallel to the industrial revolution. Following the speeches, Mehmet Şık was given the “Service Honour Award” as “the second oldest living Turkish Cypriot studio photographer”. In his short speech, Şık thanked for being given such an award by NEU and informed the participants by explaining his memories of photography.

Participants expressed the following views about the 4th International Photography Days that realized with 100% success with the contribution of 62 students from NEU Faculty of Communication under the leadership of Gazi Yüksel:

Dr. Haluk Uygur – Adana
“Perhaps, NEU Photography Days has not emerged for this goal, however, it attracted the attention of foreign photographers and they involved in the process by time. Now, NEU Photography Days has extended its dimensions to international area. The first NEU Photography Days in 1999 provided platform for photography artists from Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to come together and discuss issues and share information regarding photography. These discussions have become the most important factors sparking the development of Turkish photography (TR and TRNC). Thus, NEU Photography Days has undertaking a sparking role for the development of Turkish photography art”.

Dr. Ali M. Bayraktaroğlu – S. Demirel University / Isparta / Turkey
“NEU Photography Days not only provided contribution to photography art at international platform but also paved the way towards consensus in the context of photography art in the context of tolerance.

When considered from this point of view, I believe that the island of Cyprus, which is shown as the bleeding wound of the Middle East, has tiled the most important building block for peace via the art of photography”.

Orhan Cem Çetin – Istanbul
“NEU Photography Days were, of course, very good, very enjoyable and unforgettable as expected”.

Keiko Sato – Japan
“I am very happy that I have come to North Cyprus and NEU. I have had a good time here. I will not forget the Photography Days. I can come again. ”

Lorraine Field – Canada
“I’ve learned so much about Northern Cyprus that I couldn’t learn anywhere else. I hope your Photography Days will become a huge festival. You have a beautiful country, people and university. Thank you for your friendship and everything”.

Murat Germen – Istanbul
“As many things are shared and discussed, they can no longer be taboo as they are pulled to shreds thoroughly. The destruction of taboos is also one of the most important dimensions of development. Cordial thanks to you for providing this opportunity, for not sparing your goodwill and friendship, for not missing the smile on your faces”.

Adana Different Horizons Group
“Thank you very much for expanding the horizon of Adana Different Horizons Group a bit further”.

Handan Dayı – Istanbul
“I wish art, especially the aspect of art, which knows no boundaries, will serve as a means for peace by unifying all peoples in the future, and I congratulate your outstanding effort in this sense”.

RA Gamze Toksoy
For the first time, I am participating in a symposium that attended by so many photographers. Everything was prepared carefully by exerting effort and attaching importance. I felt myself at home. Thank you”.

Near East University organises photography days biennially and has successfully realised the 3rd photography days on 7-9 May 2003 at Atatürk Culture and Congress Centre.

Photographers from Holland, America, Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus realised 53 events over the three days which the NEU 3rd International Photography Days was held.

An interesting opening was made by cutting the film strip used by the exhibitors, instead of a ribbon, for the 23 exhibitions which were held at the same hall.

Due to intensive request, NEU academician and researcher and author Gazi Yüksel`s slideshow which describes the sad life story of the Turkish Cypriot woman on the axis of “Yemeni” (scarf) object, titled as “Yemeni Cradle to Grave” was repeated.

Approximately two thousand slides were shown and 550 photographs were exhibited at the Photography Days.
Speaking at the evaluation meeting, academic member of Department of Photography of Marmara University Prof Güler Ertan said that the NEU Photography Days was realised successfully and that it set an example for them. Prof. Güler Ertan pointed out that the lack of audience participation is related to education and culture in society and added that nevertheless, when compared with the participation in events in Turkey, it was not so bad.

Speaking at the evaluation meeting of NEU 3rd International Photography Days, organising committee member Gazi Yüksel stated that aside from being a type of art, photography is a material for friendship, love, peace and brotherhood and said there was a resistance to the existence of all these values. He said that Photography Days aims to embrace the social and universal peace and that it aims to integrate all human beings and humanity wherever they come from the world.

Organising committee member Assist Prof Dr. Birsel Matara expressed that the lack of basic art education in secondary schools in Turkey and the TRNC is clearly experienced at university level. In this regard, he emphasised that all young people have the right to this education and should not be denied.

Participating in all three of the NEU Photography Days, Photographer Dr. Haluk Uygur from Adana also made a speech and said that NEU Photography Days was at a different platform and that this platform is a platform which brings photographers from Turkey and Cyprus together; in addition to being a point where ideas are shared and discussed, and work was revealed to each other. He said:

“In this regard, it is not on me to talk on behalf of Turkey, however, I can speak on behalf of Adana and say that NEU Photography Days has a very special place and a lot of contribution. I just wish we could have done this in Turkey as well…”

In his speech, photography magazine owner Şerif Antepli stated that the magazine sold 250 in Cyprus and that the magazine read by approximately 4 people; and when calculated, this number reached 1000.

Antepli, pointed out that the number of viewers can be increased by encouraging promotions.
7th May 2005 Wednesday events of the Near East University 3rd International Photography Days started with the speech of Head of Organising Committee and NEU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Şenol Bektaş. He said:

“Dear Guests, welcome to Near East University 3rd International Photography Days. We greet you all with great joy and love. As the Near East University, we are very proud today because despite economic difficulties and against all odds, we are able to hold the 3rd of the photography days; with all necessary sacrifices which needed to be made to organise this event. As the organising committee, we have worked hard and prepared a program which you will like. We are going to live three days to the fullest. In the meantime, we are going to familiarise you with our university, our beautiful country and its people. I believe that this year, we have been very selective. For this reason, I believe that you will highly like and enjoy our exhibitions. The fact that our students will be contributing via slideshows adds another colour to our organisation. Another benefit of photography days is the contribution of such activities to photographers in our country. Similarly, thanks to this event, photographers coming from abroad will have the opportunity to get to know and watch the photography works in our country closely. The organization of the 3rd Photography Days was the work of a long period of work. Many people contributed to the organization of photography days. We would like to thank our Founding Rector, Dr. Suat Günsel who provides every opportunity for us. Also, we would like to thank Prof. Mehmet Bayhan, who is not amongst us today due to his illness, for supporting us in every organisation we held since 1995. Our contact and relationships with photographers from Turkey were made by our organising committee member Assist Prof Dr Birsel Matara, many thanks. My contribution to this organisation involves eliminating the obstacles in front of the members of the organizing committee, from time to time, and ensuring comfortable work environment. Additionally, it is to make this opening speech. All preparations in our country were carried out by our organizing committee member and academic member Gazi Yüksel and his students. I would like to thank them all. I hope you all have a pleasant time and great you, once again with love and respect.”
Organising Committee Member Assoc Prof. Dr. Birsel Matara made a speech and said:

“Thank you! Welcome all. I presume Mr Şenol explained his contributions to this organisation in a very modest way. In 1999, he and Gazi Yüksel made a proposal to me and I know closely that both are directly related to cultural and artistic activities, especially their interest in photography. For this reason, I would like to express gratitude to them both. Of course, I also express special gratitude to Founding Rector of Near East University Dr. Suat Günsel; in addition to to all administrative staff and students, anonymous heroes.”

Subsequent to NEU 3rd International Photography Days opening speeches, slideshows, presentations and discussions were held.
